Stephanie recently joined Kai Analytics as a Junior Web Developer. She was born in Romania and lived there for a few years before moving to Canada, where she is currently studying. As a computer science major at Simon Fraser University, Stephanie enjoys learning about computers and anything technology related. Her other interests include video games, physics, and hiking.

What is your background and what interested you about this position?

I started university as a physics major and while in that program, I was exposed to a couple programming classes. I had fun coding in those classes and enjoyed the problem-solving aspects of the projects we were given. I decided to switch majors and I am now working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. This position caught my eye because it focuses on web development, a field in which I am interested in. I have been wanting to learn more about website design and APIs, so this position seemed like a good opportunity to do so.

What has working for Kai Analytics been like?

It has been great! This role is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program which aims to provide Canadian youth with quality work experience. Since this is my first internship, I found it beneficial to be exposed to a work environment and learn more about the daily activities of a developer. On the technical side, I have been learning about UX/UI design and the integration of APIs, both of which are important in web development. In addition to that, I have also learned more about how projects are managed and working in a team setting.

A great part of working at Kai Analytics is the supportive environment and the emphasis on learning. I was able to grow my web development knowledge through projects and I gained new skills through the company’s workshops and provided resources. Also, working with Colin has been great because he is a more experienced developer and always willing to help. His suggestions helped me work through more challenging coding tasks and I learned a lot during the process.

How did you find out about Kai Analytics and what made you excited to work here?

I attended an annual career fair held by the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology where I saw Kai Analytics’ posting as part of the Canada Summer Jobs program. From the posting, Kai Analytics seemed inclusive and like a good fit for me. Additionally, I learned a bit about machine learning techniques in my classes and thought Kai Analytics' use of natural language processing made the company stand out.

What do you do outside of work?

In my free time, I like to explore the trails around Vancouver. One of my favourite hikes has been St. Mark’s Summit because of the amazing view at the top and the wildlife you can spot while going up. Another fun one was Lindeman Lake because of its beautiful green water and fresh air. I also like to play video games; currently some of my favourites are Valorant and Phasmophobia.

What is your favourite tv show?

One of my all-time favourite tv shows would have to be Stranger Things. I thought the storyline was interesting, and I enjoyed the sci-fi elements in the series. It was fun to watch the characters develop throughout the seasons and there were unexpected subplots that kept the story interesting. The special effects and music were also awesome, making it a great series overall.
